Lumen provides outpatient therapy for adolescents and young adults, as well as intensive outpatient treatment for adolescents ages 11–18. We also work closely with parents and families as part of supporting the adolescents in our care.
-
We support clients navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional dysregulation, self-harm, relationship challenges, ADHD, life transitions, and other mental health concerns. Because everyone’s needs are different, we’ll talk with you about what you’re experiencing and whether Lumen is the right fit.
-
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know you beyond what brought you to therapy. We’ll talk about your current concerns, history, relationships, strengths, goals, and what you hope to get out of treatment. You don’t need to come prepared with all the answers.
-
There really isn’t one “typical” session. Therapy at Lumen is individualized, so sessions may include processing what’s happening in your life, exploring patterns and relationships, learning practical skills, working toward treatment goals, or simply having space to talk through something difficult.
-
Our clinicians use evidence-based approaches based on each client’s individual needs, goals, and preferences. Treatment may incorporate person-centered and relational therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), trauma-informed approaches, EMDR when appropriate, and other evidence-based interventions.
-
Absolutely. We believe parents and caregivers can be an important part of a teen’s support system. The level of involvement will depend on your teen’s needs, treatment goals, age, and level of care while also allowing teens to develop a trusting therapeutic relationship.
-
Yes. Teens need a level of privacy to feel comfortable being open and honest in therapy. We’ll talk with both teens and parents about confidentiality, what information may be shared, and the circumstances in which we are legally or ethically required to involve a parent or caregiver.
-
Not at all. It’s completely okay if you know you or your teen needs support but aren’t sure what that support should look like. We’ll learn more about what’s going on and help determine whether outpatient therapy, our adolescent IOP, or another resource may be the best fit.
-
A previous experience with therapy that wasn’t helpful doesn’t mean therapy can’t work for you. The relationship with your therapist, treatment approach, timing, and level of care can all make a difference. We’ll take the time to understand what did and didn’t work for you before and approach treatment accordingly.
-
We work with several commercial insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan and service, so we recommend verifying your specific behavioral health benefits before beginning treatment. Our team can also help you understand the insurance and payment information associated with your care.
-
Yes. Self-pay is available for clients who do not have insurance, prefer not to use their insurance benefits, or receive a service that is not covered by their plan.
-
Virtual appointments may be available for appropriate outpatient clients based on clinical needs, therapist availability, and applicable requirements. Some services, including our adolescent IOP, have different participation requirements, which we’ll review with you before treatment begins.
-
Lumen does not currently provide medication management. When medication evaluation or management may be beneficial, we can collaborate with your existing medical or psychiatric provider or help connect you with appropriate resources. If you need a medication management provider, we can refer you to someone.
-
Yes, when appropriate and with the necessary authorization. We may collaborate with therapists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, primary care providers, schools, and other members of your treatment team to help provide coordinated care.
-
No. Lumen is not a crisis response or emergency service. If you or someone else is experiencing an immediate mental health or medical emergency, please seek emergency assistance rather than waiting for a response from our office.
-
Yes! Molly is a certified therapy dog and may participate in sessions when appropriate and desired by the client. Her involvement is always optional, and clients who would prefer not to interact with a dog can absolutely receive services at Lumen without her involvement.
Adolescent IOP FAQs
-
IOP provides a higher level of mental health support than traditional weekly outpatient therapy while allowing teens to continue living at home and attending school. Lumen’s adolescent IOP combines structured therapeutic groups with individual and family support to help teens build skills and make meaningful progress.
-
IOP may be appropriate when a teen needs more structure and support than a weekly therapy appointment can provide but does not require 24-hour inpatient care. We’ll complete an assessment and talk with your family about your teen’s needs to determine whether IOP is an appropriate level of care.
-
Lumen’s adolescent IOP serves teens ages 11–18. We consider each teen’s developmental needs and clinical presentation when determining whether the program is an appropriate fit.
-
Our adolescent IOP meets three afternoons per week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:00–6:00 PM. This schedule provides more intensive support while allowing teens to continue attending school and living at home.
-
Teens participate in structured therapeutic groups focused on areas such as emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, processing, and creative expression. Treatment also includes individual therapy and family involvement to support progress outside of the program.
-
Length of treatment depends on each teen’s clinical needs and progress. A typical episode of care may last approximately 8–12 weeks, with treatment recommendations reviewed throughout the program.
-
Yes. Our afternoon schedule is intentionally designed to allow most teens to continue attending school while receiving a higher level of mental health support.
At times, a teen may need to be released early in order to attend IOP. In this instance, we will coordinate with the school to ensure this is an accommodation.
-
Yes. Family involvement is an important part of adolescent treatment. Parents and caregivers participate in family therapy and may receive additional support, education, and guidance to help reinforce progress at home.
-
Discharge planning begins before your teen completes the program. We’ll work with your family to identify appropriate ongoing support, which may include outpatient therapy, medication management, community resources, or other services based on your teen’s needs.
Outpatient Therapy
-
Yes. Lumen offers outpatient therapy in addition to our Adolescent IOP. You do not need to participate in IOP to receive outpatient services.
-
Our clinicians support clients experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, trauma, emotional dysregulation, ADHD, self-esteem concerns, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and other mental health challenges.
-
Session frequency is based on your individual needs and treatment goals. Many clients begin with weekly sessions, although you and your therapist will determine what frequency makes the most sense for you.
Insurance & Payment
-
Lumen works with select insurance plans. Because coverage varies by plan and service, our team can help you understand your benefits before beginning treatment.
-
Many insurance plans provide coverage for intensive outpatient treatment, but benefits vary by plan. Coverage may also depend on medical necessity and authorization requirements. Our team will verify your benefits and help you understand your expected coverage before treatment begins.
-
Your cost will depend on the services you receive and your individual insurance benefits, including deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other plan requirements. We’ll provide information about anticipated costs before you begin services.
